LiSun Francisco - Illustration and Graphic Design
I'm LiSun Francisco and I'm a graphic designer and illustrator based in North NJ/NY. In my spare time, I enjoy being an unofficial brand ambassador for Glossier, watching Julio Torres' stand-up comedy (see also, Papyrus) and drinking ginger tea.
A little backstory:
My "AHA!" moment was not a revelatory experience.
If I try to pinpoint exactly when my design aspirations began, I can recall many hours spent on the floor of my childhood bedroom filling the pages of my sketchbooks with sloppy, homuncular figures that ever so slowly retained a human shape through continuous practice and time. I can recall the distinct swell of pride I felt at the age of 11 after submitting my application to the Art Instruction School's widespread "Draw Me" challenge with the image of a cartoon turtle and receiving a check for $25 along with a letter requesting that I apply again when I was older. I can recall collecting (read: borderline hoarding) objects and trinkets that caught my eye-- postcards, mugs, flea market finds-- wanting to own these things that moved me and somehow transitively absorb their creative properties.
Growing up, much of the rhetoric surrounding a professional artistic career landed on the spectrum somewhere between teaching and starving on the street, so in college I channeled much of my creative tendencies into writing as an English major and a poetry minor, even winning a small monetary award before graduating.
I spent much of my post-collegiate years taking on jobs that offered an unofficial design curriculum, landing a job in a LES art gallery and freelancing at a ceramic studio, before working as a visual merchandiser at ZARA.
So when I say my "AHA!" moment was not revelatory, it truly didn't spring out from nowhere. Somewhere between folding a stack of jeans and revamping an entire shopfloor at 6 am, I just finally decided to lead with my gut and hone my natural passion for illustration and design into a career. I enrolled in Shillington and over the course of a year learned the tools to produce the very things that enamored me my whole life. My hope is to continue in that tradition and design projects that inspire joy or a sense of delight.
